In his secret identity, Slate befriended a young woman in his apartment building named Gretchen. Soon thereafter, he learned that Gretchen was actually Zephyr Noble. Rather than turn this information over to his family, Slate kept Zephyr's secret, and told her his own. He needed her help, because his mother, Kitty, was losing control of her powers. Slate believed that if anyone could help cure Kitty, it was Zephyr's father, the brilliant inventor, Doc Noble. Zephyr agreed to help, and knowing that Doc would never willingly help the Blackthornes, Zephyr allowed herself to be injected with the same serum that fueled Kitty's powers. When Zephyr transformed into a monster, Doc had no choice but to find a cure. He succeeded, but not in time to save Kitty, who was killed by Celeste Noble (at Kitty's request).
This adventure brought Slate and Zephyr closer and at some point in the past five years, they were married. Slate is now a respected and valued member of the Noble family, and he and Zephyr live full-time on Noble Island. It remains to be seen if Slate has maintained ties to the Blackthorne family.
KNOWN SUPERHUMAN POWERS:
Slate has the ability to transform from a normal human into a large, stone humanoid being. It's unknown how this process occurs, but given that Slate's father is a sorcerer, his abilities are likely magical in nature. It's also unknown if Slate's entire body is stone, or if it's merely a stone exterior. While in this form, Slate has tremendous strength and durability.
